Story behind the origin of some of the most popular brand names

It is quite interesting to see some of the strange circumstances that lead to the origin of some of the most popular brand names today.

Adobe:
John Warnock and Charles Geschke founded world’s largest and most diversified software company Adobe in 1982, after leaving Xerox PARC.

The company is named after Adobe Creek which ran behind Warnock’s home in Los Altos, California. Hyderabad (India) born Shantanu Narayen is the CEO of Adobe Systems since November 12, 2007.

Mercedes:
Mercedes was the name of 10 year old daughter of Austrian businessman Emil Jellinek. The special car made for Emil Jellinek in 1990 by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschat (DMG) is the most known brand of the day. Mercedes actually means Grace in Spanish language.

Mercedes – Benz:
The merger of DMG & Benz resulted in the evolution of name Mercedes-Benz. Benz is named after Carl Benz who built a motorized tricycle in the year 1886.

Google:
Larry Page and Sergey Brin were thinking of a good name for the initial search engine developed by them "BackRub”

Larry Page and Sergey Brin

Larry suggested the word GOOGOL, which is the mathematical term for representing very large number (1 followed by 100 zeros). However, due to the spelling mistake the name GOOGLE was searched for domain availability and since that was available, Larry liked the same and rest is the history.

Yahoo!
No. Shammi Kapoor never inspired Yahoo! founders David Filo and Jerry Yang. The name Yahoo! is the acronym for "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle"

David Filo and Jerry Yang

David Filo and Jerry Yang jokingly considered themselves as Yahoos which has a general definition "rude, unsophisticated, uncouth”.

Nokia
After the success of his first wood pulp mill in southern Finland during 1865, Fredrik Idestam, a mining engineer by trade built a second mill few years later by the Nokianvirta river – the place that gave Nokia its name.

Idestam named his company Nokia Ab in 1871. The company has sold a variety of products in the past including television, shoes, car tires and others.

History created by Sachin Tendulkar

When the people of my age were learning the a b c d of cricket, this five and half feet little master was already hitting Abdul Qadir all over the ground in an exhibition match in Karachi. This was way back in the year 1989.

We, the people who have born in the same 70’s  in which Tendulkar was born, however being quite younger to him cannot run more than 20 runs in a gully cricket match. But see the endurance of this champion batsman who has added one more feather to his cap.

Tendulkar today created history when he scored 100 in Centurion against South Africa in the first Test match. Playing in his 175th Test match, the veteran completed his century from 197 balls. At the end of 4th Day of match Tendulkar was playing unbeaten at 107.

Tendulkar is far ahead from his immediate follower Ricky Ponting in the list of highest test century makers in Test cricket.

Here is the list of top century makers in Test cricket as on date.

The list of Test centuries scored by Sachin Tendulakr with date and venue are as below:
